EMDR Treatment with Complex PTSD and Dissociative Disorders: The EMDR Toolbox Method (ETM)

Background

The Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, the theoretical foundation of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, provides a comprehensive framework for understanding psychological disturbance and guiding clinical intervention. The standard EMDR protocol has demonstrated consistent efficacy across a wide range of clients and clinical presentations.

However, complex clients—those with high levels of psychological defenses, dissociative tendencies, or heightened sensitivity to emotional overwhelm—pose significant challenges during reprocessing.

The EMDR Toolbox Method (ETM), which systematizes, extends, and further develops Knipe’s EMDR Toolbox into a comprehensive clinical framework, offers a structured and integrative approach specifically tailored for working with complex clients, while remaining firmly grounded in the AIP framework.

Method

The EMDR Toolbox Method provides clinicians with a coherent, comprehensive, and structured system for conceptualizing and treating complex cases. It includes:

• A specific theoretical model consistent with the AIP framework;

• A structured Parts Model that helps identify parts categories and their internal dynamics, such as conflicts and protective mechanisms;

• Conceptualization tools, such as the Ovals Tool, to help clinicians map clients’ personality structures and therapeutic priorities;

• EMDR procedures and methods (tools) that can be used when Standard Protocol becomes difficult to be used or blocked. 

 

Aims of the Presentation

This workshop will provide participants with:

• A comprehensive overview of the ETM theoretical foundations; 

• An introduction to the ETM Parts Model;

• A presentation of the additional tools: the Ovals Tool, LOUA, “What’s Good About…”, LOPA, Loving Eyes, BHS, CIPOS, and IHD;

• Clinical examples illustrating the application of these additional tools.

Learning Objectives

By attending this workshop, participants will:

1. Gain an overview of the EMDR Toolbox Method (ETM) as a structured method for working with complex clients.

2. Become familiar with key EMDR Toolbox Method (ETM) concepts, such as the Parts Model, the Ovals Tool, and their practical applications.

3. Increase their skills in using the additional tools and understanding their appropriate clinical contexts.

Concrete Program

Morning

• Theoretical foundations of the ETM method and its integration with the AIP model;

• Introduction to the ETM Parts Model and the Ovals Tool;

• Presentation of tools targeting defenses: LOUA, “What’s Good About…”, LOPA;

• Clinical examples illustrating the application of these tools.

 

Afternoon

• Theoretical concepts about attachment and dissociation within the ETM method;

• Presentation of Loving Eyes and IHD;

• Presentation of BHS and CIPOS;

• Clinical examples illustrating the application of these tools.

• Conclusion

Psychologin, Psychotherapeutin (psychodynamische Psychotherapie) in privater Praxis, EMDR Supervisorin, internationale Vortragende, Expertise zu folgenden Themen: EMDR bei Erwachsenen und Jugendlichen zu einem weitew Spektrum an Störungen; klassische und komplexe PTBS, Essstörungen, dissoziative Störungen, BPD, MD, Angststörungen, Zwangsstörungen, Autoimmunerkrankungen, psychosomatischen Erkrankungen sowie funktionellen Störungen.

Das EMDR-Institut Austria bringt aufgrund seiner langfristigen Termin-, Raum-, Trainer- und KoreferentInnendisposition folgende Stornoregelung zur Anwendung:

Bei Stornierung ab Vertragsabschluss bis 6 Kalenderwochen vor Veranstaltungsbeginn fallen keine Gebühren an, bei Stornierung zwischen 6 und 3 Wochen vor Veranstaltungsbeginn werden € 40,-- zzgl. 20 % MwSt. Bearbeitungsgebühr in Rechnung gestellt. Ab 21 Tagen vor dem Seminar fallen die vollen Seminarkosten an. Stornierungen müssen schriftlich (per Brief, Fax, E-Mail) erfolgen und vom EMDR-Institut Austria als erhalten bestätigt sein (siehe AGB / Abmeldung).

Maßgeblich für die Rechtzeitigkeit der Rücktritts- bzw. Stornoerklärung ist der Zeitpunkt des Einlangens beim EMDR-Institut Austria.
Die verbindliche Anmeldung einer Ersatzperson, die die jeweiligen Teilnahmevoraussetzungen erfüllt und statt des/r gemeldeten TeilnehmerIn tatsächlich teilnimmt und zahlt, ist möglich. Dies bedarf einer Rücksprache mit dem EMDR-Institut und schriftlicher Bestätigung durch dieses.

In diesem Fall wird für den/die ausgefallene/n TeilnehmerIn lediglich die Bearbeitungsgebühr von € 40,-- zzgl. 20 % MwSt. in Rechnung gestellt. Eine unvorhergesehene zeitlich reduzierte Teilnahme hat keinen Einfluss auf die Teilnahmegebühr (keine Reduktion).
